Brandon Wheat King left-winger Jesse Gabrielle was the only Western Hockey League player selected in the Kontinental Hockey League’s draft on Thursday.
The 5-foot-11, 201-pound Gabrielle was taken in the fourth round, 156th overall, by Medvescak Zagreb, which is based out of the Czech Republic. The 16-year-old from Moosomin, Sask., had 12 goals and 14 assists in 49 games with the Wheat Kings this season.
Players are eligible for the KHL draft one year before they’re eligible for the National Hockey League draft. Canadian players drafted by KHL teams rarely play in the league.
