Kings load up at deadline

The Manitoba Junior Hockey League’s trade deadline day proved to be pretty quiet, except for the Dauphin Kings.

The Kings made three moves during the day, and got the rights to three players with connections to the WHL’s Brandon Wheat Kings.

The Kings started the day by acquiring the rights to former Wheat Kings forward Jordan DePape from the Virden Oil Capitals for future considerations. The 20-year-old DePape played in 22 games with the Wheat Kings in 2009-10 season before being traded to the Kamloops Blazers. He played 17 games this season in Kamloops, scoring four goals and picking up eight penalty minutes, before undergoing surgery on his right shoulder. It’s unknown if DePape will play for the Kings as he was added by the WHL’s Red Deer Rebels yesterday.

Dauphin then officially added 20-year-old defenceman Ryley Miller, who was waived by the Wheat Kings on Tuesday. Miller was claimed off WHL waivers by the Kootenay Ice this week, but did not report to them, choosing to finish his junior career with the Kings, who also feature former Wheat Kings Jesse Sinatynski and Jon Gaudet. Another former Wheat King, Dominick Favreau, reportedly did not return to the Kings after the Christmas break.

The Kings wrapped up their day by sending defenceman Tyler Vanscourt, 20, to the Portage Terriers for the MJHL rights to defenceman Rene Hunter, 19, who is still with Brandon and has six assists in 27 games this season. Vanscourt had five points in 11 games with Dauphin.

In other deals, the Swan Valley Stampeders shipped their leading scorer, Richard Olson, to the Steinbach Pistons for list rights to 15-year-old defenceman Zach Lamothe and future considerations. Olson, 20, has 22 goals and 39 points this season. The Stampeders have also lost blue-liners Landon Peel of Virden, who has been picked up by the WHL’s Kootenay Ice.

Meanwhile, the Winnipeg Blues sent 20-year-old defenceman Jon Stephanson to the OCN Blizzard for future considerations.
