Koe cashes big payday in Portage

Kevin Koe’s Calgary-based team whipped Kevin Martin’s Edmonton foursome 9-4 in Monday night’s final of the Canad Inns Prairie Classic in Portage la Prairie.

Koe, with Brandon-born lead Nolan Thiessen, scored threes in the first and third ends to take a commanding 6-2 lead and rolled to victory in the World Curling Tour event. Koe’s foursome claimed the $18,000 first-place prize in the $58,000 event.

Koe advanced to the final with a 5-3 victory over Winnipeg’s Jeff Stoughton, while Martin doubled up Glenn Howard 4-2 in Monday’s other semifinal. Former Brandonite Mike McEwen and his Winnipeg-based team fell 5-4 to Koe in the quarter-finals, while Stoughton swept aside former Brandon resident William Lyburn 9-1. Martin beat Brad Gushue 8-5, while Howard brushed by John Epping 8-7.

Brandon’s Rob Fowler fell 6-5 to Epping in a C-side qualifier game on Sunday night.
