Lewis leads Midget AAA Wheaties

Ty Lewis posted his first hat trick of the Manitoba AAA Midget Hockey League playoffs and set up two other goals as the Brandon Wheat Kings defeated the Yellowhead Chiefs 6-4 in Shoal Lake on Sunday night.

Robert Hechler added two goals and a helper for Brandon, which took a 2-0 lead in the best-of-five quarter-final series. Reid Hunter netted the Wheat Kings’ other goal, while Jordy Stallard and Tanner Kaspick both notched two assists and Reid Stallard made 15 saves in net.

Morgan Geekie scored three goals and set up Tanner Koroscil’s other marker for Yellowhead, which led 2-0 after the first period and 3-2 after two. Koroscil added three assists and Brett Friesen made 41 saves for the Chiefs.

The Wheat Kings will try to complete the series sweep on Wednesday when they play host to the Chiefs at the Sportsplex at 7:30 p.m.

Meanwhile, in Souris on Sunday, Kirklan Lycar, a prospect for the WHL’s Wheat Kings, had a goal and two helpers as the Eastman Selects grabbed a 2-0 series lead over the Southwest Cougars with a 5-3 victory. Tyler Kirkup replied with a pair of markers, while Sam Houston scored once for the Cougars, who got 22 saves from Tyler Crowe.
