A pair of Westman players won Manitoba AAA Midget Hockey League player of the month honours for January.
Brandon Wheat Kings’ Carter McMurdo was a unanimous choice to be MNP Defensive Player of the Month.
The 16-year-old defenceman consistently played against opposing teams’ best lines and posted two goals and six points in the month, doubling his season point total, while posting a plus/minus rating of +10 in 11 games.
Meanwhile, Brett Friesen of the Yellowhead Chiefs was named the Century 21 Goaltender of the Month.
The 15-year-old Carberry native went 4-1-1 in January while posting a 2.03 goals-against average and a .924 save percentage. His 17 wins has also broken a team single-season record. Brandon’s Justin Holder received an honourable mention for the award.
NorMan’s Brendan Barron was named the AAA league’s WHL Offensive Player of the Month.
Brandon’s Brett Kitt and Yellowhead’s Bradley Bowles were also considered for the honour.
