Dustin Schneider and Toon Van Lankvelt are off to take on the world.
Volleyball Canada made it official Friday by naming the two former Brandon high school stars to the national team for the men’s world championship, slated for Aug. 30 to Sept. 21 in Poland. Schneider, a 28-year-old setter and graduate of Brandon’s Vincent Massey high school, and Van Lankvelt, a 29-year-old left side from Rivers who graduated from Neelin, were two of the 14 players named to the national team, which headed overseas on Friday.
The Canadian team is training in Poland this weekend before battling the host team in an exhibition match Monday and heads to Finland for two more tune-ups next week.
Canada — ranked 15th in the world — is in Pool C with Bulgaria, China, Egypt, Mexico and Russia and will face the Russians — ranked No.2 in the world — to open the championship on Sept. 1.
