Skate Brandon’s Wheat Queens run through their program during a practice at the Kinsmen Arena Monday night.
Skate Brandon’s two synchronized skating teams will face some of the best of the West at the Prairie Regional Synchro Competition this weekend.
The Wheat City ConnXion and the Wheat Queens hit the road on Friday for Tisdale, Sask., where they will compete on Saturday and Sunday.
For the Wheat Queens — an elementary-level team made up 14 skaters between the ages of seven of 13 — it will be their first competition of the year after the provincial championship was cancelled earlier this month.
"It should be exciting because nobody has seen any of the other teams and we will be going out there for the first time," Skate Brandon coach Tammy McKay said, noting her young team was sharp in practice recently.
"They are looking great. They are a great group of girls and every practice they are working really hard, so we will see what they do when they perform this weekend."
Competing in the elementary division, this will be the highlight of the season for the Wheat Queens, who will not be eligible to move on to nationals.
However, the Wheat City ConnXion — featuring 16 skaters between the ages of 17 and 45 — will use this weekend’s Prairie Regionals as a trial run for the Skate Canada Synchronized Skating Championships, scheduled for Feb. 21-23 in Calgary. The ConnXion, first established in 2004, has implemented some new elements and are anxious to see how they perform this weekend.
"We have done some altering to the program since we competed in Toronto three weeks ago, so we are going out this weekend to see if our levels will score (well) and see where we stack up against the other open teams," said McKay, who added her team isn’t up to the level yet to compete for a medal at nationals.
"We aren’t in that level of competition yet," she said. "So this opportunity for us for nationals ... is something we are jumping on for the experience."
