Skate Brandon may have the market cornered on some of the top young skaters in the province.
And head coach Tammy McKay can’t wait to see how they perform at the provincial figure skating championships in Portage la Prairie this weekend.
Skate Brandon will send 14 skaters to provincials, including seven novice women’s singles competitors who are expected to dominate the division on Friday and Saturday.
"Yeah, there are only 11 (novice skaters) in the whole province and we have seven of them, so we have a good group," said McKay. "There will be a couple of them that I think will move up to junior next year."
Madison McCallum, 15, Kirsten Gutenberg, 14, and Taylor McMurdo, 14, of Brandon will skate in novice singles along with Neepawa’s Amy Todoruk, 14, Eddystone’s Caitlin Wilkinson, 15, and MacGregor’s Alexa Hulme, 16, along with Brooklyn Parker, 16, a Morden resident who trains with Skate Brandon.
In the pre-novice women’s division, Brandon’s Tori Thiessen, 13, and Courtney Morken, 12, will be joined by Reston’s Casey Bertholet, 11, and Elkhorn’s Hannah Martin, 13, along with Morden’s Jordan Parker, 13 and Portage’s Devon Borody, 10, who also trains weekly with Skate Brandon. Rounding out the local contingent is Neepawa’s Zoie Forgue, 12, who will compete in juvenile women’s singles.
McKay is expecting big things from her skaters this weekend.
"They are a younger group, but they certainly have experience," McKay said. "They have been travelling around the country doing different competitions, several of them. So even though they are younger, I am still expecting some pretty good results ...
"The girls have been training exceptionally hard and this is the big highlight competition that earns them the right to move on. So they have certainly been training well and if they do what they have been doing in training, they certainly should be in the hunt (for medals)."
The top four finishers in the novice and pre-novice category this weekend will advance to the Skate Canada Challenge — featuring many of the top young skaters from across the country — in Regina from December 5-9.
