Locals off to rugby camp

Minnedosa natives Thomas Roche and Jason Galbraith will try to crack Canada’s under-20 men’s rugby team roster this weekend.

The former members of the Minnedosa Chancellors high school rugby team will attend the national team selection camp that begins on Friday in Shawnigan Lake, B.C., and runs through to Tuesday. It’s Roche’s second chance to wear Canada’s colours, after making the national under-18 team that competed on a tour of Great Britain in 2010, going on to captain the Prairie Wolf Pack at the Canadian under-19 championship in Edmonton last summer.

The Canadian team will travel to Antofagasta, Chile, to compete in the International Rugby Boards Junior World Trophy championship from May 28 to June 9.

The tournament will feature Canada, Chile, Italy, Japan, Namibia, Portugal, Tonga and Uruguay, with the winner advancing to the 2014 IRB Junior World Championship in New Zealand.
