Locals secure junior berths

A handful of junior curling teams with Westman connections booked their tickets to their provincial championships through their regional playdowns on the weekend.

In the Westman junior men’s playdowns at Souris on Saturday, Brandon’s Shayne MacGranachan won both of his games, including an 8-3 win over Grant Jackson in the A-event final, to advance to provincials, while Tyler Grumpelt won a battle of Brandon teams 7-3 over Jackson to earn the other spot.

They will be joined at provincials, set for Dec. 26-31 in Portage la Prairie, by Carberry native Austin Mustard. Mustard’s team, which is based out of Portage, qualified through the A event of the Central region playdowns.

Meanwhile, Carberry’s Kylee Calvert took two of her three games against Brandon’s Kaitlyn Payette in the Westman junior women’s playdowns in Souris on Saturday to earn the region’s lone provincial berth. Payette took the opener, but Calvert took the final two, including a 9-2 victory in the third and deciding game.

Calvert will be joined at provincials, which also takes place in Portage from Dec. 26-31, by Minnedosa native Jennifer Curle. Her Winnipeg team went 2-0 in the Winnipeg regionals to qualify for provincials.
