Brandon Sun - PRINT EDITION

Lycar leads Selects

Kirklan Lycar, a prospect for the Western Hockey League’s Brandon Wheat Kings, scored a goal and set up another for the Eastman Selects on Thursday as they won the opening game of their Manitoba AAA Midget Hockey League quarter-final 4-0 over the Southwest Cougars.

Brett Howden and Jordan Weir also had a goal and an assist for Eastman, which took a 1-0 lead in the best-of-five series, while Brandyn Smook also found the back of the net. Mario Petit made 25 saves for the shutout.

Josh Diaz stopped 27 shots for the Cougars, who will host Game 2 in Souris on Sunday at 2 p.m.

Meanwhile, the Brandon Wheat Kings, who finished atop the regular season standings, will begin their best-of-five quarter-final against the Yellowhead Chiefs at the Sportsplex tonight at 7:30.
