Manitoba beats N.B. to finish in fifth

Killarney’s Rylie Dickson, Brandon University Bobcat recruit Nikki Majewski and Manitoba’s 18-and-under women’s volleyball team finished fifth at the National Team Challenge Cup in Winnipeg on Sunday.

The squad edged New Brunswick 3-2 (21-25, 25-11, 18-25, 25-12, 15-11) in the fifth place match.

On Saturday, Manitoba beat Quebec 3-0 (27-25, 28-26, 25-21) in the consolation semifinals after falling 3-2 (25-20, 23-25, 28-30, 25-21, 15-7) to Alberta 2 in the quarter-finals.

Meanwhile, in the men’s event in Gatineau, Que., Bobcat recruit Bruce Akubukaka and Team Manitoba finished eighth after dropping the seventh-place match 3-0 (25-22, 25-19, 29-27) to Ontario 2.

Manitoba was swept by Saskatchewan 3-0 (25-22, 25-21, 25-21) in Saturday’s consolation semifinals after falling 3-0 (25-23, 25-22, 25-20) to Bobcat middle Ty Moorman and British Columbia in the quarter-finals.

Moorman returned home with a bronze medal as B.C. beat New Brunswick 3-0 (25-20, 25-21, 25-21) in the third place match after losing to runner-up Alberta 3-1 (25-22, 25-22, 20-25, 29-27) in the semifinals.
