Manitoba had its best-ever finish at the National Women’s Under-18 Championship at Dawson Creek, B.C., on Sunday but the squad didn’t come home with the medal it wanted.
Glenboro’s Jessica Vallotton scored one Manitoba’s goals in its 4-2 loss to Ontario Blue in the championship game. Vallotton’s goal was set up by Brandon’s Ashleigh Brykaliuk — who was named player of the game — and Virden’s Karissa Kirkup.
Manitou’s Lauryn Keen scored Manitoba’s other goal.
Glenboro’s Brittni Mowat made 21 saves in the net for Manitoba, which held a pair of one-goal leads but gave up two third-period goals and was left to accept silver medals after the final buzzer.
Manitoba reached the final by posting a 2-1 record in the preliminary pool play and then defeating British Columbia 4-1 in Saturday’s semifinal. Neepawa’s Halli Krzyzaniak scored one goal for Manitoba and Bruxelles’ Cassidy Carels added two assists. Kirkup also had one helper. Mowat made 29 saves.
Prior to this year’s event, Manitoba — which also features MacGregor’s Coutlyn Oswald, St. Lazare’s Tirra Lemoine and Manitou’s Madison Hutchinson — had never finished better than third.
An Ontario team has won every event since it was first held in 2001.
