Manitoba starts strong

Both Manitoba teams got off to a good start at their National Team Challenge Cup volleyball tournaments on Wednesday.

In the women’s event in Winnipeg, the Manitoba squad, which includes Killarney’s Rylie Dickson and Brandon University Bobcats recruit Nikki Majewski, opened the event with a 3-1 (25-13, 25-17, 23-25, 25-22) victory over New Brunswick. The Manitobans will take on Quebec today.

Meanwhile, in Gatineau, Que., Manitoba’s men’s team, which features Bobcat recruit Bruce Akubukaka, swept Saskatchewan 3-0 (25-23, 25-22, 25-18). Team B.C., which has Bobcat Ty Moorman on the squad, won its opener 3-1 (25-16, 23-25, 25-18, 25-22) over New Brunswick. Manitoba plays Quebec 1 today, while B.C. takes on Nova Scotia.
