Marlins moving on up

Bret Heselwood drove in three runs and crossed home plate twice as the Brandon Marlins closed within a point of first place in the Manitoba Senior Baseball League on Friday night with a convincing 13-5 win over the Neepawa Farmers.

Elsewhere Friday, it was: Reston Rockets 14, Oak River Dodgers 5.

At Andrews Field, Ty Webber also drove in three runs, while Dustin Asham, Clark Whelpton and Pat Vandoorne all scored twice for the Marlins (13-4-1), who exploded for 10 runs in the first inning.

Shayne MacGranachan held Neepawa (2-12-0) to two runs on three hits to pick up the win.

Dale Penner took the loss for Neepawa, which got a pair of runs from Garett Rempel. Rob Wilson added two RBIs and Cam Tibbett went 3-for-3 with a run and an RBI.

Rockets 14 Dodgers 5

At Oak River, Mitch Olson was 3-for-5 with a run scored and two RBIs, while Rory Tycoles was also 3-for-5 with a run scored and an RBI as the Rockets (5-10-1) moved into third place in the standings.

Brody Pinkerton gave up three earned runs on eight hits in six innings of work to earn the win.

Ryan Shaw took the loss after giving up seven runs — two earned — on eight hits in 5 1/3 innings.

Mike McFadden scored and drove in a run for the Dodgers (5-10-0), while Colin Bates picked up an RBI.
