Vincent Massey’s Katherine Lee and Olivia Pieroni won Brandon’s first gold medal at the provincial high school badminton championships in 16 years on Saturday.
The pair ran the table in Winnipeg on the weekend and capped off their road to the girls’ doubles championship with a 21-13, 21-18 win over Westwood’s Amy Zhiao and Christine Lobo. Sonya Laroque and Krista Grove of Virden placed third.
No other Westman player was able to win a medal at provincials, although some came close.
Elkhorn’s mixed doubles pair of Shaylyn Soder and Brett Orr finished in a tie for fifth after falling 21-5, 21-9 to Teulon’s Jade Lambourne and Megan Osbak. Birtle’s Mariah Graham also had a fifth place finish in the girls’ singles event, while Massey’s Taylor Curtis and Souris’s Sarah Paulson both tied for seventh.
Meanwhile, Massey’s Duncan Campbell finished 11th in the boys’ single competition and Crocus Plains’ Jayden Sisson and Kendall Omeljanow tied for 13th in mixed doubles.
