Massey starts strong

Tanner Kaspick made the Birtle Falcons pay for letting him reach base five times on Thursday by scoring four runs as the Vincent Massey Vikings won their Prairie West High School Baseball League season opener 19-7.

Kaspick had three hits, a walk and was hit by a pitch in the game, while Bradley Schoonbaert had four hits and scored three runs for the visiting Vikings. Jordy Stallard had three hits for Massey, while Jordan Robertson picked up the win in relief of Dale Penner. Robertson held the Falcons to two runs and three hits over three innings, while striking out eight.

Meanwhile, Chad Kilimnik hit the first home run in three seasons for the Major Pratt Trojans as they won their first game of the season 14-5 over the Hamiota Huskies in Russell.

Kilimnik finished the game 4-for-5 with five RBIs, while Jobin Smith was 2-for-3 with four RBIs. Robert Wishart earned the win for holding the Huskies to one run and one hit in two innings with five strikeouts. He also went 2-for-4 and drove in a pair of runs at the plate.

Brady Waddell took the loss after surrendering nine runs on seven hit in two innings, while Morgan Geekie was 2-for-4 with a double and three RBIs for Hamiota.
