Massey wins in Winkler

Tara VanCauwenberghe put up 17 points for the Vincent Massey Vikings varsity girls’ basketball team to lead them to a 47-43 win over the Garden Valley Zodiacs and the Garden Valley tournament championship in Winkler on Saturday.

Brittany Boschman added 14 points for the Vikings in the final.

Meanwhile, Massey lost the final in the varsity boys’ tournament that was also host by Garden Valley. Johnson Duku paced the Vikings with 12 points as they fell 73-56 to the Linden Christian Wings in the final.

The Souris Sabres varsity girls’ basketball team also won a tournament on the weekend, claiming the Treherne Invitational by beating the Grandview Spartans 58-39 in the final. Sarah Palson scored 20 points and was named tournament MVP, while all-star Jamie Sherritt added 15 points.

In Winnipeg, Shawn Eisler and Kevin Hwang both scored 10 points for the Crocus Plainsmen varsity boys’ basketball team on Saturday as they fell 72-38 to the River East Kodiaks in the seventh place game at the Vincent Massey Trojans Classic.
