Mavericks go for Santa Clara title tonight

The Minnedosa Mavericks will try to win their seventh straight Santa Clara Baseball League title tonight.

Andrew Richards scattered six hits and struck out eight in a complete-game six-hitter as the Mavericks beat the Carberry Royals 5-1 Tuesday in Minnedosa to take a 2-1 lead in the best-of-five championship final.

John Hutton went 3-for-3 with a double, while Brett Madill went 2-for-4 and scored two runs for the Mavericks, who have a chance to wrap up the series tonight at 6:30 in Carberry.

Dustin Fisher went 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI last night for the Royals, while teammate Keean McLaren was 2-for-3.

Todd Heselwood took the loss, giving up five runs — four earned — in four innings on the mound, striking out four. Warren Birch came in and pitched two hitless innings of relief for Carberry, giving up one hit and striking out one Minnedosa batter.
