Mavericks make it nine straight

After being pushed to the limit, the Minnedosa Mavericks wrapped up the Santa Clara Baseball League title Friday night with a dominance befitting of a team winning its ninth straight title.

Andrew Richards pitched a complete game for the victory and also hit a homer as the Mavericks blasted the Carberry Royals 17-2 in Minnedosa, winning the best-of-five series 3-2. Richards scattered seven hits and two walks in a complete game, striking out four. He went 2-for-4 at the plate with his homer lighting the fuse on a five-run first inning after the Royals had scored a run in the top half of the frame.

John Hutton also homered in a 2-for-4 performance, scoring three Minnedosa runs and driving in two. Devin Foord went 4-for-5 with a run and two RBIs, while Jay Klym went 3-for-4 with three runs scored and two batted in.

Daylon Creasy and Warren Birch scored the Carberry runs on 1-for-3 performances, with Creasy’s hit being a solo home run.

Birch took the loss, lasting only one inning and allowing his five runs on six hits and a walk.
