For the second straight year, a Brandon team has won the Golden Gals provincial curling championship.
Joyce McDougall and her Brandon Curling Club squad of Barb Withers, Audrey Fleming and Mavis Brown stole one in the eighth end to defeat Winnipeg’s Rita Van De Vyvere 9-8 in Wednesday’s final at Swan River. It’s the second straight year Van De Vyvere has lost the final in the 60-and-over women’s event, as she fell to Brandon’s Lois Hainstock in 2013.
McDougall’s squad went undefeated through the event, topping their pool before knocking off Dauphin’s Norma Johnson 10-2 in the semifinals earlier on Wednesday.
The final was a wild one with McDougall giving up four in the first end before responding with three in the second.
The teams exchanged threes in the sixth and seventh ends and were tied 7-7 going into the final end.
Van De Vyvere defeated Hamiota’s Linda Wilson 8-5 in the other semifinal.
