Former Brandonite Mike McEwen and his Winnipeg-based team didn’t need the hammer to win the World Curling Tour’s Cactus Pheasant Classic final on Sunday in Brooks, Alta.
McEwen’s squad stole every point in the final as it beat Switzerland’s Sven Michel 8-0 in a battle of teams that qualified for the playoffs through the A event.
McEwen reached the final by beating Alberta’s Kevin Martin 8-1 in the semifinals and Brandon’s Rob Fowler 5-3 in Saturday’s quarter-finals.
Fowler reached the playoffs through the B event with a hard-fought 5-4 victory over Scotland’s David Murdoch.
Kevin Koe’s squad, which includes former Brandonite Nolan Thiessen at lead, also lost in the quarter-finals, falling 6-4 to Michel.
