Former Brandonite Mike McEwen’s foursome from Winnipeg beat Regina’s Randy Bryden 4-2 in Monday night’s final of the World Curling Tour’s Whites’ Drug Store Classic in Swan River.
McEwen’s team pocketed the first place prize of $12,000, while Bryden earned $9,000.
Bryden advanced to the final by brushing by Brandon’s Terry McNamee 5-4 in yesterday’s semifinals, scoring one in the eighth end for the victory. However, by making the semifinal round, McNamee’s foursome —which were 9-5 winners over Josh Heidt of Kerrobert, Sask., in Monday morning’s quarter-finals — earned $6,500 and also clinched a berth in the 2013 Safeway Championship men’s provincials Feb. 6-10 in Neepawa.
McEwen eliminated Jim Cotter of Kelowna, B.C., 5-2 in Monday’s other semifinal after blanking Winnipeg’s Jeff Stoughton 8-0 in the quarter-finals. Stoughton had earlier beat Brandon’s Rob Fowler 10-4 in the C Event on Sunday.
