Shanlee McLennan and Meaghan Robertson had 12 kills apiece to lead the Brandon University Bobcats to a 3-0 (26-24, 25-13, 27-25) sweep of the Saskatchewan Huskies in CIS women’s volleyball on Friday in Saskatoon.
Robertson had a hand in three blocks, while McLennan had two blocks and seven digs.
The victory moved the Bobcats (7-10) into a tie, at least temporarily, for the seventh and final playoff spot in the Canada West conference with the Manitoba Bisons. The 7-9 Bisons don’t play their first match of the weekend until tonight against the Regina Cougars (3-13). Candace Hueser had 16 kills for the Huskies (3-14), who host the Bobcats again tonight.
Meanwhile, Sam Tuivai had 16 kills and Garrett Popplestone had 37 assists but it wasn’t enough as the Bobcats men’s volleyball team lost in four sets (17-25, 19-25, 25-22, 23-25) to the Huskies.
The loss drops the sixth-ranked Bobcats to 10-7. Roy Ching also chipped in with 10 kills for BU.
Meanwhile, in the men’s late basketball game last night, Jordan Reaves scored 19 points and Ilarion Bonhomme chipped in with 18, but it wasn’t enough as the Bobcats fell to the University of Saskatchewan Huskies 68-65.
Michael Smith was the only other Bobcat to register double digits in points, shooting five for 15 from the floor, good for 13 points.
Ben Baker scored 19 for the Huskies, while the conference’s leading scorer Stephon Lamar was held to just five points.
The loss drops the Bobcats to 3-12, dead last in the Prairie Division of Canada West.
The Bobcats host the Huskies again tonight at the Healthy Living Centre, beginning at 7 o’clock.
