Three-time defending Brandon Sun Westman Super League of Curling champion Terry McNamee started his season on the wrong foot on Wednesday night as he lost 6-5 to fellow Brandonite Brian Fowler at the Brandon Curling Club.
Fowler controlled the game and the only time he trailed was when he was down 4-3 after four ends. Fowler replied with a deuce in the fifth, forced McNamee to a single in the sixth and scored one in the eighth to win.
In Wednesday’s other games, it was: Jim Renwick 6, Kelly Marnoch 1; Duane Lang 7, Kelly Skinner 3; Mark Anderson 4, Jerry Chudley 2; and Curtis McCannell 5, Shawn Taylor 4. The game between Cale Dunbar and Perry Fisher was postponed to an undetermined date.
Renwick 6 Marnoch 1
Renwick’s Brandon squad blew the game open with three in the fifth end, and Carberry’s Marnoch decided to shake hands after giving up a steal of one in the sixth.
Lang 7 Skinner 3
In another battle of Brandon squads, Lang stole two in the second end to grab a 3-0 lead and never looked back in his six-end victory over Skinner.
Anderson 4 Chudley 2
Brandon’s Anderson, who went winless last year, scored a deuce in the fifth, stole one in the sixth and added a single in the eighth to knock off Neepawa’s Chudley.
McCannell 5 Taylor 3
Steals of one in the second and eighth ends held up as the difference as Pilot Mound’s McCannell beat Brandon’s Taylor, who returned to the league after a one-year absence.
