A late rally came up short for the Brandon Wheat Kings in their Manitoba AAA Midget Hockey League semifinal opener on Wednesday night in Winnipeg.
After trailing 6-0, the Wheat Kings battled back with four straight goals but fell 6-4 to the Winnipeg Thrashers.
Tyler Penner led the Thrashers with two goals, while Dane Schioler added a goal and two assists, with Brandon WHL prospect Ryley Lindgren notching a goal and an assist. Maverick Rafter and Braden Purtill also scored for Winnipeg. Tyler Coulter replied with two goals, while Duncan Campbell and Coltyn Bates added singles for Brandon, which will host Game 2 of the best-of-five series Friday at 7:30 p.m., at the Sportsplex. Starter Justin Holder and backup Tyler Gutenberg combined to make 20 saves for Brandon, which outshot Winnipeg 28-26.
