Murray wins at junior nationals

Alex Murray earned Brandon’s first victory at the Canadian junior racquetball championships in Grande Prairie, Alta.

Murray, the top seed in the girls’ 16-and-under singles division, swept Jessica Leduc of Valleyfield, Que., 15-1, 15-4 in the first match of the round robin on Tuesday.

Murray gets today off in singles before getting a chance to wrap up the title on Thursday against Jewel Sauve of L’Assomption, Que.

In doubles, Murray and partner Milana Paddock evened their record at 1-1 with a 15-6, 15-4 win over Juliette and Marjolaine Parent of Saint-Jacques, Que.

They are tied for third place in the 18-and-under category, with a matchup this morning against top seeds Danielle Drury of Saskatoon and Michele Morissette (2-0) of Baie-Comeau, Que.

Paddock will also face Morissette (1-0) today in 18-and-under girls’ singles, with the Brandonite taking an 0-1 record into the meeting.

Reid Sorotsky of Brandon is 0-2 in the boys’ 12-and-under singles category. Sorotsky fell 15-2, 15-1 on Tuesday to Logan Boudreau of St-Charles-Borromée, Que.

Now out of playoff contention, Sorotsky will wrap up his championship today against Naman Gauri (0-2) of Lethbridge, Alta.
