Mustangs claim title

Richard Watson and Campbell Lloyd both scored second-half goals for the MacGregor Mustangs in their 2-0 win over the Stonewall Rams to win the provincial high school boys rural soccer championship on Saturday in Altona.

Byron Wiebe earned the clean sheet for MacGregor, which claimed its first-ever provincial rural boys soccer crown. Lloyd and Brad Wright were named tournament all-stars, while Carter Willis was the MVP.

Meanwhile, Ali Redcliffe scored in the first half of extra time to lift the Rivers Rams to a 2-1 win over the Stonewall Rams in the rural girls championship final.

Sydney Sprenger scored the other goal for Rivers, which also won its first provincial rural soccer title.

The Hamiota Huskies finished third with a 2-1 win over the Garden Valley Zodiacs, while Minnedosa placed fifth.

Sprenger was named tournament MVP. Kendra Johnston, Eleanor Hyndman and Jillian Beever from Rivers as well as Grace Kang and Keegan Robinson from Hamiota were named to the all-star team.
