Czech import Richard Nejezchleb rejoins the WHL’s Brandon Wheat Kings today after a free agent tryout with the NHL’s Pittsburgh Penguins.

The 19-year-old right-winger was released on Monday after signing an amateur tryout agreement and suiting up with Penguins prospects at an NHL rookie tournament last week in London, Ont. The 6-foot-2, 210-pound Nejezchleb is coming off an injury-shortened rookie season in the WHL in which he scored 11 goals and notched 24 points in 35 games.

He returns after the Wheat Kings reassigned three players on Monday to trim their pre-season roster to 30. The Wheat Kings sent homegrown centre Tanner Kaspick, 15, and right-winger Nolan Patrick — a Winnipeg native who turns 15 later this month — to the Manitoba AAA Midget Hockey League ranks, while defenceman Mark Matsuba, 16, was assigned to St. Albert of the Alberta Midget AAA Hockey League. Patrick was picked fourth overall and Kaspick 25th overall in this year’s WHL bantam draft, while Matsuba was a fourth-round selection in 2012.

The moves leave the Wheat Kings with two goaltenders, 10 defencemen and 18 forwards on the pre-season roster, although drafted defencemen Ryan Pulock (New York Islanders), Eric Roy (Calgary Flames) and Nick Walters (St. Louis Blues) are all still away at NHL training camps this week.

The Wheat Kings are 1-1 in pre-season play after splitting a weekend series with the Moose Jaw Warriors. Brandon returns to action on Friday night when it hosts the Regina Pats at Westman Place at 7:30, before closing out the pre-season schedule in Regina on Saturday. The Wheat Kings’ regular-season home opener is slated for Saturday, Sept. 21 at Westman Place, with individual game tickets now on sale.

CORRECTION: Wheat Kings rookie left-winger Jesse Gabrielle, 16, had a goal and an assist in Sunday’s 6-4 pre-season victory in Moose Jaw. He was credited with two assists on the WHL website.
