Newcomer, veteran earn Bobcat awards

New point guard Carrera Lamoureux and fifth-year setter Garrett Popplestone have been named the Brandon University Bobcats players of the month for October.

Popplestone, a Brandonite, earned Tip Top Tailors Male Athlete of the Month honours after spreading the floor well as the Bobcats men’s volleyball team jumped out to a 3-1 record to start the Canada West season. The 6-foot-1, 175-pound setter is fifth in the conference with 9.43 assists per set and has been involved in 10 of Brandon’s 44 team blocks. He also has seven kills, one ace and 22 digs.

Lamoureux has started every game for the Bobcats women’s basketball team so far — including their nine pre-season contests and first two regular-season games of the Canada West season — en route to being named the Pantages on Park Salon and Spa Female Athlete of the Month.

The 5-foot-6 guard, who transfered from Canadian Mennonite University this season, is currently tied for eighth in the conference by averaging 34 minutes of playing time per game in Brandon’s opening weekend losses. Lamoureux has nine points, five assists and five rebounds this season.
