Les Nicholls pitched a two-hitter and the Hamiota Red Sox broke out for seven runs in the seventh inning as they beat the host Hartney Hoppers 7-1 on Sunday to move within one win of the South West Baseball League title.
Nicholls was efficient, walking two batters and striking out two, holding the Hoppers at bay until the Red Sox got their bats going in the final inning.
Tyler Strachan doubled, singled and drove in three runs for Hamiota, while Brett Braybrook went 2-for-3 with a run and an RBI. Nick Cowan and Mark Agnew had the Hartney hits. Ryan Reid pitched 6 1/3 innings for the loss, giving up seven runs — six earned — on six hits, three walks. He also hit three batters and struck out three.
With a 2-1 lead in the best-of-five final, the Red Sox will try to clinch the title when they host Game 4 on Wednesday at 6:30 p.m.
