The 80th and final game of the 10th annual Brandon Sun Spartan Invitational varsity boys’ basketball tournament may have been the best of the weekend.
In a rematch of last year’s Victoria Inn (Tier 1) Division final, the Oak Park Raiders and Garden City Fighting Gophers went head-to-head again, this time with the Raiders pulling out a 79-76 victory on Saturday at the Neelin gymnasium. The contest was a tight one right down to the end.
Nik Zorcic stole the ball and went in for an easy layup with 10 seconds left to put the Raiders up by three and they withstood a late Gopher attack to secure their fifth BSSI crown. Zorcic, the tournament’s MVP, finished the game with 22 points, while Roger Milne had 14 for Oak Park, which went 3-0 in the round robin before beating the Kelvin Clippers 99-66 in the semifinals.
Jowel Shuffler paced the Gophers, the defending provincial and BSSI champs, with 25 points. He was named an all-star along with teammate Arel Cansino, Oak Park’s William Sesay and William Kohler.
