Jon Gaudet scored the game-winning goal and set up two others as the Virden Oil Capitals won their Manitoba Junior Hockey League debut 4-2 over the Dauphin Kings on Friday at Virden.
Dylan Gedjos scored the first goal in Oil Capitals’ history 3:12 into the first period. Richard Olson and Ben Johnstone also scored for the hosts and Myles Nykoluk added two assists for the Caps, formerly the Winnipeg Saints.
Brendan Hurley replied with both goals for the Kings.
Kyler Beckett made 23 stops in the Virden net, while Jeremy Pominville made 19 for Dauphin.
In Friday’s other games, it was: Steinbach Pistons 4, Neepawa Natives 1; Portage Terriers 3, Waywayseecappo Wolverines 2; Winnipeg Blues 6, Selkirk Steelers 5; and OCN Blizzard 5, Swan Valley Stampeders 2.
Pistons 4 Natives 1
At Neepawa, Justin Augert had a goal and an assist for the Pistons to ruin the Natives’ home opener. Cory Koop made 59 saves for Neepawa. Matt Boha replied with the lone goal for the Natives.
Terriers 3 Wolverines 2
At Waywayseecappo, Tyler Anton, Lyndon Lipinski and Ryan Tront all scored for the Terriers as they won their season opener.
Brett Pinkerton, who’s from Pilot Mound, and Russell Turner replied for Wayway. Cory Simons took the loss in net despite making 28 saves.
