Olympic dream still alive for Canada

The Summer Olympics are a win away for Brandon’s Dustin Schneider and Rivers’ Toon Van Lankvelt.

Schneider, a 27-year-old setter, and Van Lankvelt, a 28-year-old left side, helped 18th-ranked Canada battle back for a 3-2 (22-25, 25-23, 19-25, 25-23, 15-11) triumph over 17th-ranked Puerto Rico in Friday night’s semifinals at the NORCECA Men’s Olympic Volleyball Qualifying Tournament in Long Beach, Calif. Van Lankvelt had nine kills and three blocks while Schneider added three blocks.

Canada will face the winner of last night’s late semifinal between the United States — ranked sixth in the world — and Cuba — ranked fifth — in tonight’s final, with the winner earning a berth in the Summer Olympics in London.
