Brandon’s Isabela Onyshko is heading overseas to represent her country on the international stage for the second time.
The 15-year-old star of the Brandon Eagles Gymnastics Club has been selected by Gymnastics Canada to compete in the seventh annual World Cup Challenge in Doha, Qatar, in the Persian Gulf.
Onyshko, who competed for Canada in France last fall after making the national junior team, is coming off a superb showing earlier this month at the prestigious L’International Gymnix competition in Montreal where she earned a gold medal on uneven bars in the senior women’s competition and finished fourth all-around in a field of 32 elite gymnasts from six countries.
Onyshko, who was born in Minnedosa but now lives in Brandon, will be one of 150 gymnasts — including a number of Olympic medallists — from 34 countries who are slated to compete in Qatar, with Brandon coach Joe Stouffer accompanying her.
Onyshko, who is trying to make the senior national team and compete in this year’s Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland, is scheduled to head overseas on Saturday, with the World Cup Challenge slated for March 26-28.
