The Brandon University Bobcats would have loved to sweep the Alberta Pandas in Canada West women’s volleyball on the weekend, but they settled for a split.
After struggling in the first set Saturday night at the Healthy Living Centre, the third-ranked Pandas (12-4) rallied to beat the Bobcats 3-1 (23-25, 25-15, 25-15, 25-16).
Head coach Lee Carter would have loved a better result on the second night of their two-match set, but he said Friday’s victory has already done a lot for his Bobcats (6-10).
"If you look at it globally, the split is exactly what we needed," he said.
"We’re happy. Now we just have to work on confidence, and we say this every weekend. We played good one game and the next game we come out with a different set of expectations and it weighs down on us. We need to get rid of that and play with the fun and excitement of the game we like."
Victoria Dakin led the Bobcats with 13 kills and eight digs, Kellie Baker had five kills, 38 assists and eight digs, while Lexi Loewen chipped in with nine kills and two blocks.
Despite Saturday’s loss, the Bobcats are back in the playoff picture, sitting one win back of the Calgary Dinos and Manitoba Bisons for the final playoff spot with six matches left.
Brandon has a chance to move up the standings this weekend when they visit the Saskatchewan Huskies (3-13), but Loewen knows her team can’t take them lightly.
"We’re noticing that we push really hard against the good teams, but the teams we think we should do really well on we don’t do as well," she said. "We need to work and keep mental toughness and hopefully next week we can come out and win from this."
CAT SCRAPS: BU will be without left side Chloe Reimer for the rest of the regular season. Reimer suffered a hairline fracture in her right heel after landing awkwardly in practice last week. She’ll be in a walking cast for two weeks, and Carter hopes she’ll return in time for the playoffs.
