Paul lifts Spartans

The Neelin Spartans varsity boys and Virden Golden Bears varsity girls are each one win away from advancing to the provincial AAA high school basketball championships.

Andrew Paul scored 21 points as the Spartan boys, ranked fourth in the province, bounced the unranked Golden Bears 73-28 in an interzone game on Thursday at Neelin. Noah Patton added 12 points for the Spartans, while Matt Trussler led the Golden Bears with eight points.

In the girls’ interzone game, Heidi Smith netted 18 points as No.1 Virden topped fourth-ranked Neelin 66-59. Natalie Vachon chipped in 18 points for the Golden Bears. Paige Thomson scored 23 points, while Courtney Matienzo added 19 for the Spartans. Neelin could still qualify for provincials as a wild card.

The Neelin boys and Virden girls will visit the Swan Valley Tigers on Monday, with the winners advancing to provincials, March 20-22 in Swan River. Both Tiger teams are unranked.
