Plainsmen get physical for 1st win

The Crocus Plainsmen weren’t happy with how they started the Westman High School Rugby season, and they took out their frustration on the Swan Valley Tigers on Friday.

The Plainsmen bounced back from a season-opening shutout loss to the Vincent Massey Vikings with the most physical effort Crocus coach Sean Erickson has seen from a Plainsmen team. Crocus grabbed an early 10-0 lead on its way to a 15-5 win over the Tigers at John Reilly Field.

Steven Siebrecht, Dryden White-Eagle and George Rooke scored tries for Crocus, while Kyle Johansen scored the try for the Tigers (0-1).

In Friday’s other boys’ games, it was: Souris Sabres 51, Dauphin Clippers 0; and Vikings 52, Elton Sabres 0. In the girls’ games, it was: Tigers 50, Plainsmen 12; and Souris Sabres 64, Clippers 0.

Souris 51 Dauphin 0

At Souris, Alberto Pozo, Brendan Roberts and Stevie Mulligan scored two tries each, while Nathan Greig, Michael Fortin and Michael Gohl supplied singles for the Sabres in the season opener for both teams. Adam Kowalchuk kicked three conversions.

Vincent Massey 52 Elton 0

The Vikings improved to 2-0, while the Sabres dropped to 0-2.

Swan Valley 50 Crocus 12

At John Reilly Field, Danika Shaw scored three tries and Lane Mychalchuk added two tries and three conversions for the Tigers (1-0). Brooke Mosiondz scored a pair of tries, Kenzie Tripp had one and Samantha Burnett kicked a pair of converts. Mia Flamand supplied all the scoring for the Plainsmen (0-2) with two tries and a convert.

Souris 64 Dauphin 0

At Souris, Kendra Roberts scored four tries, while Alix Sabeski and Kaylee Butterfield each scored two for the Sabres (2-0). Jessie Robbins, Kristen Kirkpatrick, Charlotte West and Parker Janz also scored tries, while Shannon Brady and West kicked one conversion each. Dauphin is 0-1 on the season.
