Stephanie Hunter had five kills and 11 blocks to lead the Crocus Plainsmen to a 3-0 upset of the Vincent Massey Vikings in Brandon High School Volleyball League varsity girls’ action on Tuesday night.
Kasie McLaughlin added five kills and a whopping 21 digs, while Abbi Robinson chipped in with 15 digs to lead the Plainsmen to a 26-24, 28-26, 25-12 sweep.
Jill Giesbrecht replied with 11 kills and four aces for the host Vikings, who are ranked fourth in the province among AAAA varsity girls teams, while the Plainsmen are not currently ranked.
The Vikings wore pink uniforms as part of their drive to raise money for Cancer Care Manitoba. While they lost the match, their fundraising effort was a huge success, with the team’s pledge drive raising a total of $2,707.58, easily surpassing their goal of $2,000.
Meanwhile, in varsity boys’ action, Vincent Massey turned the tables to sweep Crocus Plains 3-0 (25-20, 25-19, 30-28) behind nine kills and two aces from Daven Pascal and eight kills, six digs and three aces from Jared Friesen.
Joel Pulver replied with eight kills, while Jake Cullen added seven kills for the Plainsmen.
