Quiring carries Spartans

Alison Quiring’s 16 kills led the Neelin Spartans to a 3-1 victory over the host Vincent Massey Vikings in varsity girls’ action in the Brandon High School Volleyball League on Tuesday night.

Paige Thomson added 10 kills for the Spartans, who won 25-17, 18-25, 25-12, 25-21. Tristan Neudorf replied with 18 kills and 23 digs, Carmen Hutsal had 18 kills and 12 digs, while Kelsey Pettinger added five kills, eight digs and two blocks for the Vikings.

Neelin is ranked fifth in AAAA in the province, while the Vikings, who started the season ranked No.1, have slipped to ninth this week.

Meanwhile, in the varsity boys’ game last night, the host Vikings edged the visiting Spartans 3-2 (25-22, 20-25, 16-25, 25-21, 17-15).

"It was a marathon," said Vikings coach Kurt Hunter.

Jared Friesen had 17 kills and 10 digs, Joel Rocan added 11 kills and seven digs, and Seth Friesen notched 11 kills for Massey. Theo Farough replied with 20 kills, while Brandon Lalonde had six kills and five blocks for Neelin.

In freshmen girls’ action yesterday, Vincent Massey-Black beat Crocus Plains-Maroon 4-0 (25-7, 25-20, 25-22, 25-19).
