Kelly Robertson’s bid to win a third straight provincial senior men’s curling title came up one end short Monday.
The Neepawa skip — playing with third Doug Armour of Souris, second Peter Prokopowich of Dauphin and lead Bob Scales of Winnipeg — dropped a tough 7-6 decision to West Kildonan’s Bob Sigurdson in yesterday afternoon’s Strathcona Senior Men’s Provincial Curling Championship final in Killarney. Robertson led 6-5 entering the 10th and final end, but gave up a deuce to Sigurdson to end his two-year run as provincial champion.
Robertson’s team had gone 6-1 to top the Black Group in pool play before beating Sigurdson 10-8 in Sunday night’s 1-versus-1 Page playoff game. Sigurdson bounced back to beat Pilot Mound’s Curtis McCannell 10-5 in Monday morning’s semifinal to advance to the final.
Sigurdson now joins Brandon’s Lois Fowler in representing Manitoba at the 2013 Canadian Seniors Curling Championship in Summerside, P.E.I., from March 16-24. Fowler’s foursome — with third Gwen Wooley, second Lori Manning, lead Joan Robertson and fifth Jill Hazelwood — captured the provincial senior women’s title on Sunday in Souris.
