Lee Robins and his Brandon Curling Club team of Pam Robins, Bart Witherspoon and Tanya Enns came up just short of playing for a provincial mixed curling championship on Sunday.
The foursome gave up one in an extra end to Winnipeg’s Jared Kolomaya to fall 8-7 in the semifinals in Altona. The weekend had been pretty successful for Robins’ team, as they placed second in their preliminary round pool with a 2-1 record before topping three-time provincial mixed champion Sean Grassie 6-3 in the quarter-finals.
Meanwhile, Neepawa’s Ron Kulbacki also made the playoffs after going 2-1 in his pool. His team, which includes Terry Ursel, Jeff Stewart and Darla Hanke, fell 5-3 to David Kraichy in the quarter-finals.
Kolomaya won the provincial title with a 6-5 victory over Kraichy in Sunday’s final.
Killarney’s Don Chatham went 1-2 in his pool but missed the playoffs, as did Carberry’s Trevor Calvert and Dauphin’s Ray Baker, who both went 0-3.
