Royals roll to victory

@03 Body Copy:The Carberry Royals are one win away from the Santa Clara Baseball League final after a

9-3 win over the Portage Padres on Monday night in Portage la Prairie.

Warren Birch tossed a complete game for the win as Royals took a 2-1 lead in the best-of-five semifinal, scattering eight hits in the seven-inning contest, with one walk and a pair of strikeouts. Rod McLeod took the loss.

Carberry did all of its damage in two innings, scoring six runs in the fourth inning and the other three in the fifth. Daylon Creasy collected two hits, including a double, for the Royals, while teammates Eric Kucharski and Todd Heselwood head had a hit and two runs scored.

Scott Dewis had three hits and scored twice for the Padres, who will try to avoid elimination on Wednesday, when they visit Carberry at 6:30 p.m. Meanwhile, the Minnedosa Mavericks will try to sweep their way into the final as they take a 2-0 series lead into tonight’s home game (at 7 o’clock) against the Plumas Pirates.
