Rugby Canada’s National Championship Festival didn’t turn out to be as much fun as Manitoba’s under-18 teams hoped it would be, as both went winless at the event in Calgary.
The boys’ squad — which includes Brandon’s Bryce Colquhoun, Daniel Alvarenga and Conor Farran as well as Minnedosa’s Norman Sims and Logan Patterson and Souris’s Nathan Greig — closed out the event on Saturday with a tough 14-10 loss to Saskatchewan and a 24-12 defeat to Prince Edward Island.
Alec Bernier and Teagan Horton had the tries for Manitoba against P.E.I., while Daviau Baptiste Jean Robert and Shane Thiessen touched the ball down against Saskatchewan.
Manitoba, coached by Brandon’s Sandy Donald, went 0-4 in the round robin before falling in both matches that determined who finished ninth.
Meanwhile, the girls’ team — which includes Brandonites Brittany Boschman and Kelly Braun as well as Hailey Rapsky and Mallory Workman of Minnedosa, Charlotte West and Kendra Roberts of Souris and Mary Hughes of Dauphin — lost 48-0 to Saskatchewan and 71-7 to Alberta on Saturday to finish the round robin 0-6. Lane Mychalchuk scored the try for Manitoba, which was coached by Brandon’s Shawn Sarkonak.
