The Brandon Wheat Kings hope the arrival of training camp on Aug. 29 will revive sluggish season-ticket sales.
The Wheat Kings announced at a media conference on Wednesday that 1,969 season tickets had been sold for the upcoming season, compared to more than 2,200 by this point a year ago.
The Wheat Kings raised season-ticket prices this year, coinciding with their new five-year lease agreement with the Keystone Centre, although they also offered a lower-priced seniors’ ticket for the first time since 2005-06.
Wheat Kings general manager Kelly McCrimmon said he believes there is a variety of reasons contributing to slower sales this summer.
“I always make refence to really it’s October 1 before you know for sure where you’re gong to end up with your season tickets, but when we’re behind like we are, it’s a little bit concerning,” he said, “and it could be a variety of things: Weather, people away, obviously July and August aren’t months where people are thinking about buying hockey tickets. It’s something that picks up a lot more in September, so again I think (the team is) not alarmed, but just a bit concerned that we need to get moving with those numbers.”
The Wheat Kings sold about 3,000 season tickets last season.
In other news from Wednesday’s conference, the Wheat Kings and CKLQ have agreed on a new five-year agreement for radio broadcasts of all pre-season, regular season and playoff games. Bruce Luebke, with 1,571 games under his belt, will be back to call games for his 20th season.
