Shearer leads way for Wheaties over Wild

James Shearer scored a pair of goals as the Brandon Wheat Kings won the battle of Manitoba AAA Midget Hockey League division leaders 4-2 over the Winnipeg Wild Sunday afternoon at Winnipeg.

Justin Holder backstopped Brandon (29-8-2) to victory with a 46-save effort. Jordan Kaspick also scored for the Wheat Kings, while Duncan Campbell added an empty-netter.

Taylor Fisher and Jordan Bochinski replied for the league-leading Wild (31-5-2).

On Saturday, it was: Yellowhead Chiefs 3, Central Plains Capitals 1; Southwest Cougars 3, Pembina Valley Hawks 1; and Winnipeg Thrashers 4, Wheat Kings 1.

Chiefs 3 Capitals 1

At Shoal Lake, Bradley Bowles had a goal and an assist as the Chiefs (27-10-3) took sole possession of second place in the West Division, two points ahead of the Hawks. Shawn Bowles and Logan Young also scored for Yellowhead. Tyler Ham of MacGregor scored for the Capitals (16-19-3).

Cougars 3 Hawks 1

At Cartwright, Josh Diaz had a brilliant 46-save effort to lead the Cougars (21-17-2) to the upset victory. Meyer Nell, Michael Fortin and Cameron Whyte scored the Southwest goals, while Daylon Creasy added two assists. Colt Conrad of St. Alphonse scored for the Hawks (26-9-3).

Thrashers 4 Wheat Kings 1

At Winnipeg, Lukas Skrumeda scored twice as the Thrashers (30-5-3) snapped Brandon’s four-game winning streak. Tanner Kaspick scored for the Wheat Kings.
