Shearer shines for Brandon

James Shearer’s third-period hat trick helped the Brandon Wheat Kings eliminate the Yellowhead Chiefs from the Manitoba AAA Midget Hockey League playoffs with a 6-3 victory on Wednesday night at the Sportsplex.

Duncan Campbell added a goal and two assists, while Josh Kobelka and Robert Hechler scored the other goals. Reid Hunter chipped in with three assists and Jordy Stallard had a pair of helpers for the first-place Midget Wheat Kings (39-3-2), who completed a sweep of the best-of-five quarter-final series.

Logan Young, Morgan Geekie and Derek Cross scored the goals for the eighth-place Chiefs (19-21-4), while Josh Martin notched a pair of assists.

Brandon’s Tyler Gutenberg made 23 saves, while Yellowhead’s Brett Friesen stopped 39 shots.

Meanwhile, in a late game the Southwest Cougars were eliminated with a 4-2 loss to the Eastman Selects in Beausejour. Eastman swept the series 3-0.
