Shmyr earns assist

Brandon Wheat Kings forward Braylon Shmyr picked up an assist for Team Pacific as it fell 4-3 to Team Quebec in their opening game at the World Under-17 Hockey Challenge on Sunday in North Sydney, N.S.

Shmyr set up Glenn Gawdin’s third-period marker that put Pacific up 3-2, but Jérémy Roy and Maxime Fortier replied for Quebec to pick up the win.

On Saturday, Wheat Kings forward Jesse Gabrielle led Team West to a 7-1 victory over Germany in their exhibition tune-up on Saturday in Port Hawkesbury, scoring two goals and assisting on another. Meyer Nell of Boissevain also scored for West, while Brandonite Tyson Verhelst played the first half of the game in net to earn the win. He faced only six shots and stopped five of them.

Shmyr was held off the scoresheet as Pacific lost its exhibition game 4-3 in a shootout to Russia on Saturday in North Sydney.

Team West and Team Pacific will face each other tonight in North Sydney.
