Shootout stops Brandon midgets

The Brandon AAA Midget Wheat Kings will have to wait another night to lock up first place in the Manitoba AAA Midget Hockey League.

Vince Loschiavo scored twice in regulation time and again in the shootout as the Winnipeg Thrashers slipped past the Brandon Wheat Kings 5-4 on Wednesday at the Sportsplex.

Nolan Patrick, a draft pick of the WHL’s Wheat Kings, added a pair of helpers and a goal in the shootout for the Thrashers (31-7-3). James Shearer led the Wheat Kings (37-7-4) with a goal and two assists, while Jordy Stallard, Jordan McCausland and Ty Lewis also scored.

Reid Stallard made 32 saves for Brandon, which is four points up on the second-place Winnipeg Wild with two games remaining.

Meanwhile in Souris, Keaton Jameson, Sam Houston and Tanner Lewis each had a goal and an assist for the host Southwest Cougars as they beat the Pembina Valley Hawks 4-3 and clinched a playoff spot.

Graeme Hore also scored for the Cougars (21-18-3), who exploded for three goals in the middle frame and got 18 saves from Josh Diaz. Bennett Dalke had a goal and a helper for the Hawks (18-18-5).
