Heidi Smith of the Virden Golden Bears has earned the nod as the Tri-Star rural athlete of the week.

The 5-foot-7 guard led her team to the championship title in the Golden Bears varsity girls’ high school basketball tournament on Saturday night in Virden. Smith, a senior guard who was a member of Manitoba’s women’s basketball team in the Canada Summer Games in Quebec, averaged 19 points, 12 assists and four rebounds per game for the Golden Bears last weekend. The Grade 12 student also sports an 84 per cent academic average.

"Heidi is a very driven athlete who gives her all on the court," Golden Bears coach Stephen Densmore stated in a news release.
